The main character, Yugo Hachiken, comes to the school at his father’s insistence. A city boy who knows nothing about agriculture, Hachiken is surrounded by classmates who are striving for agriculture-related careers. Little by little, unsatisfied and unhappy, Hachiken starts to appreciate and see the importance of farm life.
These manga explore the occupations, issues and lifestyles related to agriculture and farming. They frequently take place on a farm or in the countryside, and follow protagonists that learn or practice skills such as tilling the earth or taking care of barnyard animals.
Before she became a mangaka, Hiromu Arakawa worked on her family’s farm, and now she’s ready to educate the world. From explaining what a typical day on a dairy and produce farm is like, to describing how harvesting machines work and even telling why milk is good for you, Arakawa is here to spread her love of farming to the nation.
A collection of eggplant-related stories focusing on a returning series of characters, such as Takama, a farmer, and a young girl named Aya Takashi, who begins the series abandoned by her father and residing in Tokyo with her two younger siblings, and as the manga progresses to its second volume, leaves the city to reside in the countryside with her relatives, near Takama’s farm. Apart from the chapters concerning Takama and Aya, other stories are also featured, such as one telling the chronicles of samurai in the Edo period hunting forbidden eggplant, another set atop a futuristic Mount Fuji, another tale concerning a truck driver, and also Summer in Andalusia, the story concerning the professional Spanish bicyclist Pepe Benengeli, from which the film was adapted.
Both manga feature guys who end up in fantasy worlds and start building towns and gathering followers to be farmers and builders instead of combatants.
