Going into this episode I was a little bit concerned,
because the animators usually did 2 chapters per episode, and the school
festival arc actually had 3 chapters to it, so I was concerned we’d only got
part of the story and the rest would be awkwardly integrated with the chapter
that followed this arc. But my concerns were put to rest, as this episode
integrates the entirety of the school festival arc, and we have one nicely flowing episode
with a smooth continuous story (and not the amalgam of 2 different stories
which was episode 2).
So, while the episode was really funny, at the end
of it all, I can’t help but feel sorry for Igarashi, Nanashima and Shinomiya
for having fallen for an airhead who is more interested in seeing them paired
up with each other than her (I think it’s clear by this point that Mutsumi is
not yet interested in her in a romantic way – which is ironic seeing as Kae has
already formed an opinion on him, unlike her other suitors).
Igarashi ends this episode with
The last images are a tribute to Kae’s BL tendencies
which have not made any appearances for almost 2 episodes straight (that is a
total of 5 manga chapters…):
Honestly, the fact that Drifters went ahead and used Scipio Africanus instead of a more obvious choice such as Caesar or Augustus, makes me appreciate the show even at 3 episodes. I’ve seen other shows handle motley crews of characters and ensemble casts, so for me its too early to tell if the show will be able to handle it or fall apart under the weight of its ambitions.
