“BJ Alex” is a Korean webtoon written and illustrated by the author Mingwa and this series was initially serialized on Lezhin. The story follows a young university student Donggyun who’s a fan of a gay BJ (short for broadcast jokey) named Alex and has developed a huge crush on his internet persona. But as soon as the youngster realizes his beloved BJ also attends his university, Donggyun’s enthusiasm about him slowly wavers as he realizes Alex isn’t as dreamy as he initially thought.

Now to drop some of my thoughts: my friend K. had told me about this manhwa a long time ago and I always promised I’d check it out as soon as the main story is finished (which I did). I wasn’t exactly sure I’ll like the story considering the initial synopsis and first few chapters of the webtoon where I absolutely hated Alex and his douchy behavior but I guess that was the point of that kind of beginning. But as I continued to read through the chapters, I found myself unable to stop. Some cliffhangers were so well-timed and excellent I wasn’t able to put down the phone for even a second until I finally finished all chapters of the main story… in one damn day. I was surprised by that accomplishment but boy was that a powerful read.

But as many people say, Karma is a bitch and Alex learned it the hard way which was so satisfying to observe, his whole downfall starting when he realized he couldn’t get his little friend up unless Donggyun wasn’t around, this whole aspect making him depend on his partner in order to continue doing his job as a BJ. And from that point on things just started going downhill but the most satisfying moment for me was definitely the growth of Donggyun’s backbone, this boy finally learning to respect himself first and dumping Alex’s sorry a$$. But when our favorite BJ hit the rock bottom was when he finally realized he actually fell in love with Donggyun and after trying to get back together got the same cold treatment from him, having the taste of his own medicine. I will not play innocent here, I laughed so hard when that happened, I was jumping with happiness around my apartment, saying “NOW YOU GOT IT, NOW YOU GOT IT!” I’m childish, I know.

But what I especially love about this baby is how he slowly starts to realize no one, not even the one he’s in love with, can treat him like crap the whole time. His friend Chenwoo gave him a huge push in that regard but most of the work is done by Donggyun alone. He slowly stopped having any excuses for Alex’s shitty behavior and had grown such a backbone I wanted to pat him on the back when he finally dumped that BJ’s sorry ass. His indifference towards Alex in the middle of the story was so satisfying for me I was smiling from ear to ear whenever Donggyun would refuse passes from Alex that would work if his old, insecure self was involved in that exchange. But here is one more important point: despite finding his backbone and learning how to stand up for himself, he was there for Alex when BJ needed him the most, thus helping his soon-to-be lover to break out of his own self-pity cycle, Donggyun completely understanding how hard it is to stop hating or degrading yourself.

In the end, we see “BJ Alex” is a story about finding self-love and self-respect while also being a support to one’s partner and I think it’s its crucial appeal. All of the main characters learn about very important aspects of life through their very hard and painful trials and when we finally see them happy together, it just makes your heart flutter with happiness. So, I guess I now know the secret behind this webtoon’s popularity 😉
