Horror is a fairly niche genre not only in manga but also in western fiction. It also takes a particular skill to pull off, with an attention and understanding for what really makes humans afraid. Unfortunately, Toshi Densetsu doesn’t have a good grasp of good horror presentation. Partially, I feel like manga is a poor medium for doing horror (it reveals too much, while not having other elements like sound and animation like horror movies), but at the same time I can imagine how a good horror manga could work. I’ll be on the lookout for other horror manga and I have my fingers crossed that a good one exists out there. That said, I still enjoyed the stories in Toshi Densetsu. The urban legends were legitimately interesting and they often ended with twists I did NOT see coming. I think with more suspenseful and frightening presentation of each story, they could have been really excellent. As they are, Toshi Densetsu is merely OK, bordering on pretty good.
