Oricon has finally released their list of best selling manga in Japan for the year of 2022. Jujutsu Kaisen tops the list with over 12.8 million copies sold overall, beating Tokyo Revengers by a small margin. Though the manga managed to retain its top spot, the numbers reveal that it’s sales fell by more than half compared to sales in best selling manga list of 2021.

Besides watching anime, one of my other hobbies I spend quite an extensive time on is reading manga. I started doing that since primary school (with the likes of Conan and Jojo) and still keep up with quite a few series down the years. I still prefer the paperback version over reading any scanlation online personally. Recently, I came across oricon’s annual list of manga sales in Japan by series and volumes, so I just can’t help but try to put together some analysis on this to see what I might find. Maybe it will be some other cools series that I did not know before for me to get addicted on! Unfortunately, I can only find raw data that goes back to 2008 so I can’t analyze anything older. Anyway, 6 years of data is still relatively decent and I can still draw some substantial conclusion from it.

The sales volume of manga magazines and manga books in Japan amounted to 582 million copies in 2017. The number steadily decreased from around 1.89 billion copies sold in 1995.

The manga is very popular in the country, where its sales alone represent 8.5% of the French manga market by 2021. The first volume had sold more than 1 million copies in France by July 2021. The 100th volume had one of the biggest initial prints ever for a manga in the French market, selling 131,270 copies in just three days, the best-selling manga volume in a week in the country. The manga sold 6,011,536 copies in 2021. This amount represents almost 20% of the total sales in the country; almost one in five volumes of the series was sold in the year.
