A few things to get out of the way first.
1. This review assumes you have seen the anime version of Puella Magi Madoka Magica (The original series and or the first two movies) as well as the 3rd movie, Rebellion. If you have NOT seen them then please stop reading and go see them before reading this review, this series should NEVER be spoiled so please heed my advice. I have not read the manga version of the series, only the ones that sadly don’t have an anime adaptation such as the Wraith Arc, the very manga I’m about to review with this review.
2. The
This will be my first review on MAL. I chose this Manga since it’s a spin-off of, what is at the time of this writing, my all-time favorite anime. There will be spoilers in this review for the original Madoka Magica, as it would be ill-advised to read this spin-off without first seeing the original show anyway (or reading the manga adaptation if that floats your boat).
I’ll try to avoid spoiling anything from this manga itself, but there may be some spoilers.
Story: 6/10 The story is fast-paced, fun, dark, and not without some all-around good action. That said, the ending and the final product don’t really
The manga follows the anime of Puella Magi Madoka Magica almost exactly. Considering how insanely overpriced the anime is (good as it is) this manga tells the same story for far less money. The story here is just as great as it is in the anime. If you loved the anime, you’ll love this.If you haven’t watched Madoka, then all I can do is recommend it. In the spirit of Revolutionary Girl Utena, Madoka seeks to deconstruct the magical girl sub-genre of shoujo manga. A must read for any shoujo fan.
This manga serves as a direct sequel to Madoka Magica and sets up the events leading to the movie Rebellion. And it does so very well!
The wraiths are depicted as interesting and unique enemies and are clearly different from the witches. While a few questions about them and the story in general are left unanswered, we also get a lot of satisfying answers. Homura Akemi is the main character of this story and we get a lot of insight into her psyche as well. I also have good news for people who want to see more of the other girls, as we get to
I feel like I’m in the minority here on MAL, and that’s kinda depressing. Madoka Magica by and large is one of those programmes which receives no shortage of praise that I simply can’t agree with one way or the other. I wouldn’t mind it so much were it not for the fact that any sort of valid criticism or complaints anyone has with this series is instantly lost in a sea of downvotes and angry rants made by rabid fans who’re breathing heavily whilst typing on their keyboards rapidly. Regardless, I’ll make a feeble attempt at getting my voice heard. Will it work? Probably
