During development, Kurumada initially named the protagonist Rin and titled the manga (). However, he later changed it to Seiya, first using kanji for “Holy Arrow” (to reflect his status as a Saint) before settling on “Star Arrow” to emphasize the celestial theme. The final title, , was chosen once the Saints’ concept solidified. One of Kurumada’s earliest ideas was the Pegasus Meteor Fist, designed to evoke a meteor shower, aligning with the constellation motif. Despite a slow start—due to reader unfamiliarity with concepts like Cosmos and Sanctuary—the series gained popularity within six months. The term Cloth was derived from sacred clothing, reinforcing the mythological foundation.
The hit manga and anime series, Saint Seiya, has returned in a new series from . Saint Seiya – Knights of the Zodiac: Time Odyssey kicks off a new adventure for the classic group of knights, as they begin a face off with Chronos, god of time. The latest iteration provides an entry point for new readers, while keeping classic elements fans will readily recognize.
The story and character designs are highly reminiscent and loyal to the original series. Each character’s powers and armor appearance match the original designs. The art style stays true to a general manga style, foregoing the 3D, CGI-animated nature of the most recent adaptation from Netflix. This makes it a story that is accessible for fans of either the original anime/manga series or the newest adaptation, as well as completely new readers learning about the Knights of the Zodiac for the first time. The new threat is well-designed, adding to the mythos of the world. Chronos made an appearance in Saint Seiya: Next Dimension and the alternative timeline of Saint Seiya: The Lost Canvas. Arctos and the Twelve Hours are new, original characters that fit well into the world of the franchise. Saint Saiya – Knights of the Zodiac: Time Odyssey #1 is an intriguing and respectful addition to this generation’s iteration of the classic series.
After the revival with the Hades Chapter being a success they decided to make a new movie that took place after the Hades arc which they were still adapting in OVAs and would be canon to the manga as well since finally they were going to tell the Heaven arc that series creator Masami Kurumada never got to tell even in Manga form. The movie is full length and very different from normal Saint Seiya stuff which put off a lot of fans, others were confused since this was released during the Hades arc adaptation but it takes place after it. It can be seen as a bit pretentious but I thought it did an excellent job in setting up a new saga in a refreshing way, sadly the movie bombed and we didn’t get anything more from it and only the cliffhanger ending.
As mentioned we got the final manga saga the Hades arc as OVAs told through 3 different chapters starting in 2002 which lead to a revival of Saint Seiya thanks to the success which revived interest in the brand and the merchandise that followed. The first saga Sanctuary started coming out in 2002, the second Inferno came out in 2005 after the Heaven Chapter movie and the third and final part Elysium in 2008. So as you can see it took 6 years for the story to be told which kind of hurt both the quality and inertia the franchise had going. It’s worh noting that they tried to bring more manga details into this OVAs which means some small retcons happen that the original series had shown differently but nothing too bad.
