I have been working through my previously bought manga. At the beginning of 2021 on impulse I began looking up manga centered around dance, specifically ballet. After all I was once a bit of a ballerina myself and was looking for something that would fill a void in my heart for it. Cue, Subaru by Soda Masahito. I scooped up the first seven volumes, secondhand by pure luck, and by coincidence I found the remaining four volumes at a different store. There was nothing left but to read them.
I’m getting chills all over again writing that description. Subaru is perhaps the first manga I’ve read where I have physically felt raw energy radiate from the pages. It’s so distinct, vivid, and compelling where I felt myself get more engrossed with each passing page, especially during the performances. I’ve never had a series so perfectly replicate the tension that goes into a truly moving ballet performance. For this feeling alone, Subaru is perfect for any current or former ballerina, and anyone else who happens upon it.
All in all, when the music stops the curtain drops, and reading this series cover to cover; Subaru is a brilliant ballet based manga. The amount of detailing from story, design, and execution is a marvel to read, and one that makes my former ballerina miss my ballet slippers. By no means is it perfect, there’s plenty of errors and a lack luster ‘true’ ending. It delivers on showcasing the passion that goes into ballet and I highly recommend ballerina or not that if you have the chance to read it. You won’t be disappointed.
Wow, sounds like you really liked it. This one certainly sounds like an interesting manga. I would really love to read more ballet focused manga, but at the moment I’m a little sensitive about family trauma, so I probably won’t be reading this one for a while. But thanks for the great tip, and I’ll keep Subaru in mind for future reading!
With MF Ghost having concluded and the 30th anniversary of Initial D fast approaching, author Shuichi Shigeno has announced a new manga. Subaru and Subaru will take place in the same universe his two previous street racing epics and will shift the focus from Toyotas to, as astute readers may have guessed, Subarus.
