How good is chainsaw man manga

So yeah, this series is good; it is really, really, good. I might go so far as to call it nearly perfect. Chainsaw Man is a cocktail of incredible parts which work in unison to form one of the most compelling manga I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading. I simply cannot recommend this enough to anyone who enjoys manga and anime, especially quirky, dark, and over-the-top Shonen. If you’re looking to start a new series and get totally sucked in, Chainsaw Man is just waiting for you. As long as you take the plunge, this series is one ride you’ll never forget.

A great way to gauge what’s rising in popularity is to see how many people are cosplaying as characters from a property. At this year, there were the usual standbys from previous years: Dragon Ball, My Hero Academia, and Demon Slayer, but multiple times I saw young people in white shirts, black slacks, and an enormous chainsaw jutting from their forehead. Despite not having an anime on TV (though one has been announced to be in development) or any merchandise presence in the US, Chainsaw Man by Tatsuki Fujimoto has garnered a following from its manga alone. Chainsaw Man is basically an adrenaline charged dirtbag shlock comic with a heart and some great artwork and it is gaining a devoted following.

Here’s the thing: Chainsaw Man is, in fact, legitimately good. It is also violent, gruesome, unsettling, fairly horny, and at times bleak. Fujimoto has a fantastic ability to make his manga cinematic, to employ gore, and yet also explore the depths of humanity. There’s tragedy, hope, and humor. There’s a Cronenberg-esque absurdity to this manga, wherein horrific things happen, but also characters develop meaningful relationships.

That’s a lot to say about a manga that’s really about a boy who fuses with his dog after dying and gets chainsaw powers that can only be tamed by hugging a woman. But Denji’s thirst for a girlfriend is really about his desire for human affection. His greatest dreams are to eat good food and have someone hold him. For all its wacky and cinematic action, Chainsaw Man is about loneliness and wanting security. Denji just wants closeness.
