I personally don’t think Jiraiya knew who Naruto was, as I don’t see anywhere in the manga/ anime wherein Jiraiya gets to know a child survived and acted as a vessel for the nine-tails. It was told in the anime that Jiraiya was away from the village for many years. So when, when he started training Naruto, he got to know that “Naruto” was the Fourth’s son.

Several reviewers for manga, anime, video games, and other related media have provided praise on Jiraiya’s character. Davey Jones from ActiveAnime remarked Jiraiya’s training with Naruto as good comic relief and noted how similar both of these characters are. AnimeonDVD’s Justin Rich also praises Jiraiya’s introduction in the series noting him to be a funny character. Jason Van Horn of commented on his relationships with that “they share so much in common”. Matt Shingleton of DVD Times noted Jiraiya to be “the greatest character Masashi Kishimoto has ever created in this series” and further commented that “besides the fact he fills the comical pervert archetype he’s one of the strongest characters in the series and just about everything about him is rough and unpredictable”. praised his Sage Mode, commenting it would make a good . He also expressed shock by the character’s death while fighting Pain, seeing him as a sympathetic person.
So, how do I think this applies to jiraiya’s case? His books, most of his books are connected to each other in some way or another his first book “THE TALE OF A GUTSY NINJA” was his own life adventures inspired by Nagato’s will with Naruto’s name and according to Minato a “masterpiece” also every time Nagato, Minato, Naruto were shown reading the story they thought of themselves as the main character. Then there’s the Icha Icha Series most likely his own story and fantasies with Tsunade. BUT I definitely think we might get one last Jiraiya book, since the manga is about to end I recently started to re-read some old chapters (out of nostalgia I think) and something caught my eye though I must confess I never gave too much attention to the very first chapters of the manga I noticed something really curious which made think in this theory)
Now… tell me that this doesn’t sound to you as if someone is introducing/reading us a story, a tale. It even introduces us to the main characters of the story (in just one page) a brave hero who sacrifices himself (minato) in order to seal a demon/beast (Naruto being the cage for that demon) they even gave us a “plot“ of protecting the people and (the recurrent premise of the manga always being (“protect the village and It’s people”). With that in mind let’s go back to jiraiya’s death we got a very poetic one with him reflecting on his life and thinking the worst of himself for not being able to achieve his goals, thinking he just like his first book was a complete failure. In chapter 383 which it’s called “THE LAST CHAPTER AND…” Jiraiya just like with Obito is giving us his last thoughts as he sinks deeper and deeper to the bottom of the sea.
