The original Hei no Naka novel came out in 1986 and was a smash hit, Japan at the time being relatively favorably disposed to yakuza tales. The book spawned a TBS drama, a movie and this manga and even won an award for introducing a new catchphrase, “— menmen” into the Japanese language.
the series in the free web manga magazine in 2014. published the sixth compiled book volume in November. The series has a total of more than 350,000 copies in print.
At 88 pages and being A4 size, this was my first foray into anime artbooks. And I was not disappointed at all.You get 70+ pages dedicated to Tohko Mizuno’s anime, Harukanaru Toki no Naka de (aka Harutoki), as well as 6 pages of the artist’s other work, and several more pages of character costume design and an index of what Harutoki merchandise is available to be found. The colours are bright, the lines are clean, and for the most part, the artist takes good advantage of the size of the pages and creates wonderful, full page illustrations.Fans of the anime and manga should definitely get a hold of a copy, although it is hard to get one in new condition. I’ve been lucky enough to find one that still has its silver obi (which is almost never pictured with the artbook).
