Monday was a very special day for readers of Weekly Shonen Jump, and not just because it was the on-sale date for the manga anthology’s first issue of 2021. January 4 also marked the 1,000th chapter of One Piece.
With the popularity of the manga, an animated television series was launched in 1999; it exceeded 1,000 episodes in 2021. More than a dozen animated feature films have been released. The 2022 film One Piece Film: Red was watched by more than 14 million theatergoers in Japan during its theatrical run and brought in 1.2 billion ($8.9 million) on its opening day, making it the third film in Japanese history to make over 1 billion yen on its opening day. Video games, art books, and trading card games based on the series have also been released.
There are 975 issues of One Piece, as of the time of this article’s publication. But it’s not just the manga series—which Oda Eiichiro has written and drawn since 1997—One Piece is also a 20 season anime series, 14 animated movies, novels, a theme park and restaurants, a CCG trading card game and an upcoming live-action Netflix series.
While we’re only at the very beginning of a long saga, there’s a lot in the first issue of One Piece, “The Dawn of Adventure,” that’s likely to animate the manga series moving forward. I haven’t read ahead, but the first issue contains clear, appealing goals and a character with obvious and enduring attributes. Luffy D.
