Hey, I’m still alive!Anyway, I wanted to check out the Dark Gathering manga since I like the anime that’s currently still airing. The manga is pretty much the same, but maybe makes some plot points a little clearer. It’s a bit chaotic, but the actual horror in this series is very cool (by which I mean absolutely messed up). However, I do think it’s absolutely necessary to read Yayoi’s lines and hear her voice from the anime in your head, because her voice actor is absolutely perfect (talking about the original Japanese version, at least).
Dark Gathering is increidbly stylish. The entire look and spirit have a post-emo visual design that looks like a cross between Goth trappings and cutesy tones that makes for what can be called “spooky cute.” Dark Gathering radiates this cute vibe but never forsakes its horror roots. There are some genuine spine-tingling moments where gruesome art takes the stage, followed by impressive fight scenes where Yayoi struts her spirit-hunting prowess. However, mangaka Kenichi Kondo lets his artistic aspirations get the better when he puts too much into one panel. Double-takes to grasp what is going on in some of the messier panels are required for reading this manga.
The only problem that can be seen with its story delivery, especially with regard to the comedy, is that it relies a little too much on some tired tropes and . There is even some suggestive comedy that will raise a few eyebrows, but the good news is that it passes quickly enough and is done in sparse doses that it does not leave too much of a stain on the overall work. All in all, Dark Gathering is a worthwhile romp through the world of the dead dancing dangerously with the living. Fans of moe anime and supernatural themes will get a kick out of this manga.
From that striking first chapter, Dark Gathering escalates the threat with each encounter. Locales will often feature a malicious ghost and tens of their unfortunate victims. The art never shys away from emphasizing the gruesome fates that awaits them with gore and viscera rendered in loving detail. Stark whites of the ghosts and deep blacks of the environments help to elevate the manga’s atmosphere.
Despite the horror focus, Dark Gathering is a battle manga at its core. This becomes apparent following an encounter with a malevolent god that decimates Yayoi’s amassed collection of ghosts, forcing her to break out powerful spirits known as “Graduates.” She uses them to battle and capture other dangerous spirits in what amounts to an R-Rated Pokemon battle. Yayoi even borrow’s Satoshi’s “Getto Daze” catchphrase after a successful capture. The Graduates also invoke memories of the Bleach as releasing one requires speaking a verbal command followed by their flowery name.
