My Girlfriend’s Not Here Today
If you are interested in the genre, or already are, I highly recommend Kyou wa Kanoji ga Inai Kara. The art is extradinary, and whilst the premise of the story seems underwhelming, I promise it’s not! It instigates questions like "is cheating okay?" "is cheating okay is my girlfriend doesn’t love me?" "Is it really considered cheating?" But then again, you wonder who is at ‘fault’ here.Summary- When her priorities don’t align with her girlfriend’s, she wonders if her partner putting her second behind volleyball is taking away from their relationship. So far, these girl’s relationship is a secret, one considered salacious to the public eyes. There is always a boundary put up in between them, in the crevice there’s a wall of conflicting interest, for whereas one girl wishes for her partner to pay attention to her, openly display affection, and longing for change, the partner considers their relationship to hinder her club sports; she fears opening up will lead to their detriment. Unable to express her wants, she decides to put her hopes in her volleyball-obsessed girlfriend, and tries to find a balance between what she needs and what her partner wants. But the reality is, she understand in her girlfriend’s eyes she’ll always be number two, she’ll never be talked about with confidence, she’ll never be registered as something other than an embarassment. That is, until she meets Fuuko, a classmate who, by using the means of blackmail, becomes quite close. Fuuko is determined to show her love interest that she’s number one in her eyes, appealing to her with the affection she so yearned for. And while she never told her girlfriend how she truly feels, she knows that Fuuko can give her what she so desires. (I’m sorry, I don’t remember the names of the two main characters, it’s a bit confusing but I hope it makes sense! The girlfriend/partner = one person (volley ball obsessed); She/her = another person; Fuuko = the one she has an affair with). Thoughts for when you finish reading Kyou wa Kanohi ga Inai Kara- I enjoy the characters, and honestly My Girlfriend’s Not Here Today brings out a melancholic tones throughout, even if that specific genre is not listed. The artwork doesn’t make Kyou wa Kanojo ga Inai Kara as sad, which I appreciate, (steers it away from a sad drama manga) and even I’ve come to support the affair! In this sense, I found the cheating up to a certain point reasonable, her girlfriend doesn’t care about her and it’s the girlfriend’s fault, however she needs to tell her girlfriend how she feels, she can’t keep switching between these two girls and pretending everything is okay and even ethical. So I don’t justify the cheating, but I consider it, and the factors that lead up to it, all the girlfriend’s fault. And I guess some could argue that she should’ve talked it through with her girlfriend, how she feels, but it’s a two way street.

So many rom-coms play will-they-won’t-they for the entire season (or three!) before the couple officially exchanges confessions or starts dating, making shows like this almost a novelty. Izumi Yuu and Shikimori Micchon are already an established couple out of the gate. Izumi is an incredibly unlucky and accident-prone fellow, but Shikimori is up to the task of protecting him—and flashing a “cool, dark side” while doing it.
Izumi has a touch of that urge to protect rather than be protected, but circumstances never turn out that way, so he takes it in stride, just as Shikimori takes the occasional chalkboard eraser to the head in defense of her beloved. When she overhears other boys wonder out loud why she’s with someone so dull, she makes sure they
